FMG port facility tailings pond dredging

FMG port facility tailings pond dredging

In preparation for the expansion of an existing iron ore facility, Hall was engaged to undertake dredging works at FMG’s port facility in Port Hedland, Western Australia. The project involved dredging over 4.5million m³ of tailings and pumping them a distance of 2.4km.

In order to maintain water quality to meet strict environmental standards, Hall pumped water back to the dredge pond to create an effective ‘closed circuit’. Working 24/7, the team used two Beaver 1200 cutter suction dredges and two booster stations to transport the material.

The timely delivery of the contract ensured the client avoided costly delays to its capital works program.
